The Meaning of Self-Help
I love the phrase 'self-help'. It stands for helping yourself, which is what we should all do. I know it is not always as easy as it sounds. Sometimes it can be down right miserable!
In choosing the beginning of a road, we also choose its destination. Old Folk Saying
Self-help can mean helping ourselves find peace, health and contentment. The best part of taking control of your own health is getting involved and learning about ourselves. You simply can not help yourself by ignoring what is going on. Learning about all aspects of your life can be empowering. Learn how your body, mind and spirit work together. Learn what makes you you. Learn how to get rid of anger, depression, illness, stress, etc. Life is how you percieve it. Life events do not cause you stress, the way you think about it does. This can turn into a downward spirial and be the cause of your demise.
I'll give you an example:
I took my dogs for a run in the country. One of them got sprayed by a skunk. I was out in the middle of nowhere and had to put the dogs in the car to bring them home. My first reaction was anger, I was angry with the dog for stinking and it was going to make my car stink, then my house stink, and probably me stink too! I was blamming the dog for finding the skunk and causing all these problems.
After those initial thoughts I started laughing. The dogs name that got sprayed by the skunk was 'Skunk'!
I turned the situation around and began the self-help part. I stopped by the store on the way home and bought a few cans of tomato juice. I gave the dog his last bath (he will not get in the tub anymore) in it. That really didn't do the trick so I started researching how to get rid of the smell. I put a bowl of vinegar in my car and sat a few around my house. That did keep the eyes from watering.
The end result was not holding onto the anger and stress, it was finding the humor and solution in the event. That is what self-help is all about. Finding the solution that replaces the stress.
Conquer Stress, Depression and Anxiety
Learn what causes your stress and how it is related to the little aches and pains you have. Learn how to live stress free.
Stress is a major cause of illness. Events do not cause stress, the way we think about those events cause stress. If we help ourselves and change the way we think, we can help ourselves by experiencing less stress.
My favorite way to practice stress relief is wearing a rubberband around my wrist. When I notice myself thinking thoughts that cause stress and tension I snap the rubberband. That reminds me to think positive thoughts. It brings me back to the present, not dwelling on a past event or making up a future one. Self-help starts with listening to yourself and what goes on in your mind.
