refridgerator/freezer smells

Recently having had the power off for a week due to a hurricane, my fridge and freezer smelled awful even though I cleaned out the food. I had tried baking soda and cleaning with vinegar to no avail. Mom used to keep 2 or 3 lumps of grill charcoal in our fridge when I was a kid instead of baking soda. I bought some activated charcoal like they use in fish tank filtrations as a show on tv recommended, also because there was noi charcoal for grilling to be found after the hurricane. It worked great in the fridge but not the freezer portion. I spread it out on a baking sheet. After a day of it not working on the freezer, I added coffee grounds as they work pretty well to remove smells in my carpet if left over night before vacuuming. Still did not remove the smell. I tried cleaning with bleach water, no good. At this point at least the freezer was cleaner than it had ever been. I put about 3 tablespoons of vanilla exract in a small container and popped that in the freezer. Voila! overnight the smells were gone and have not come back.
