Muscle Spasms and Pain

Muscle spasms and pain can really be a pain in the you know what. There are lots of natural ways to remedy the problem. Some are simple and some are more complex. Based on my personal experience, which isn't much, leg cramps and spasms are the most painful. I had a knot in my back a few times years ago. I went to the chiropracter and they put an ultrasound machine on my back to relax it. I nearly jumped out of my skin! She said she had never seen anyone react like that at the setting she had it on. But, believe me, it hurt. It did relax it in the long run, but it was not an experience I will ever forget.

The next time I went to the doctor and he prescribed a muscle relaxer. I found I do not react well to them either. I couldn't even change my daughters diaper. Talk about a brain fog!

My experience with muscle cramps have been during labor, having a baby. That is just plain awful. The nurse took my foot by the toes and pulled it up toward my body. Apparently that relieves the stress on the muscle and it stops the cramp. I could have kissed her! But I was still a bit busy having a baby at the time.

According to Linda Page (Healthy Healing, p.459) muscle spasms, cramps, twitches and tics are usually a result of body vitamin and mineral deficiencies or imbalances. Most cramping occurs at night as minerals move between the blood, muscles and bones. A good diet and natural supplements have been very successful in fortifying and strengthening the body against nutrient shortages. Improvement is noticeable within one to two weeks. Leg cramps are usually the result of poor circulation.

According to Bottom Lines Prescription for Natural Cures, written by James F. Balch, M.D. and Mark Stengler, N.D., nutritional deficiences of calcium, magnesium, potassium, and the B-vitamins are often the root cause of muscle aches and cramps. They also say lack of sleep could be a cause.

My own thoughts

Working with people I have come to the conclusion that a lot of long term muscle aches come from tension and/or toxic build-up. If you pay attention to the way you hold your thoughts in certain body areas, that is likely where you will find tense spots. Until you release those mental tensions, those muscles don't have a chance to relax. Just being aware of this is sometimes all it takes. I found that practicing Yoga is a great way to let go of tension, both mentally and physically. The Y Catalog.. So is meditation.

Toxic build-up can happen to all of us. There are many great detoxifying herbs that help.

-Burdock-

-Echinacea-

-Yellow dock-

-Nettles-

Of course there are many more, and most work better in combinations. I encourage any of you that have on going muscle aches or fatigue to get in touch with a knowelgable herbalist or natural health practitioner. They can personally help you get in touch with the source of the problem and find ways to remedy it.
