There are different reasons for kidney failure, also known as renal failure. If you have or have had kidney stones they may cause damage. If you have kidney disease or polycystic (PKD) disease, which is a genetic disorder. Recurring infections should be looked at and delt with. Poisons and direct trauma can cause failure. If you have had any renal problems deal with the cause. Drugs like aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and some prescription ones can cause kidney failure too.

When one door of happiness closes, another one opens, but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us. Helen Keller

Signs and symptoms

Early stages of the kidney failure can be hard to detect by yourself. Look for frequent headaches, tired, or itchy all over. Poor appetite and baggy eyes or muscle cramps.

Later signs can be: feeling the urge to urinate more often or not as much, and burning feeling. Feeling nauseous or vomiting. You may have trouble concentrating (more than usual) and your skin may darken. Your hands and feet may swell or be numb.

Please see your healthcare professional if you have any of these symptoms. You need to keep your kidney functioning to live a long and healthy life. The other choices are a transplant, dialysis, and death. Here are some of my recommendations for your health.

Things to avoid

-aspirin-used other than recommended, or long term

-ibuprofen-used other than recommended, or long term

-acetaminophen-used long term, or other than recommended

-naproxen-used other than recommended or long term

-any analgesic (pain killer)-used in combination with another can cause kidney failure harm

-any analgesic combination which also contains caffine or codeine-can cause kidney failure

-out-dated tetracyclines-are poisons

-toluene inhalation (industrial exposure or glue sniffing)-

-combining over the counter drugs or prescription drugs with alcohol-

Normal aging usually takes it's toll on the kidneys naturally. That is the common belief. I don't know if I completely agree. Sure they will wear out sooner or later, but some people do live full, healthy lives well into their 100's. I think it is because of their lifestyle and eating habits. As well as their outlook on life. We do have 2 kidneys so even if one wore out at 50 we should have another 50 years on the other one! So for goodness sake take every precaution to keep from getting to the point of having your kidneys fail.

Contributing factors of kidney failure

-degenerative diseases-

-congestive heart failure-

-anemia-

-rheumatiod arthritis-

-fibrinogen formation-

-fibrosis-

-diabetes-

-asthma-

-lupus-

-psoriasis-

Helpful herbs

-tumeric (curcumin)-powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Suppresses oxidative stress and increases glutathione in the kidneys. May be used if you are diabetic.

-ginko biloba-protects small blood vessels and capillaries. Is a blood thinner so consult your healthcare professional before taking this herb.

-green tea-decreases blood levels of urea nitrogen and creatinine. Decreases urinary levels of protein and glucose (indicators of kidney damage).

-nettle leaf tea-full of absorbable minerals, helps supress inflammation.

Other helpers

-vitamin B comples-

-L-carnitine-an amino acid that has been shown to be effective in providing cellular energy, both in healthy people and those with chronic illnesses.

-vitamin C-helps heal wounds and may help keep infections away.

-vitamin D-along with calcium and magnesium, or just make sure to get 20 minutes in the sun each day.

-vitamin E-protects from free-radical damage, a major help in renal health. This is also a blood thinner so consult with your healthcare professional before using.

-iron-only under the supervision of your healthcare professional Anemia is common in people who have kidney disorders.

-taurine-an amino acid that plays a major role with proper function.

And don't forget to believe in your own healing power. I don't want to hear any of this "I'm so sick I'll never get any better" crap. Or "that's it, I have kidney failure, now I'm a gonner for sure". That is just the kind of thinking that will get you no where. I want to hear you say "every day I am getting better and better", and believe it. Your mind is a powerful tool you can use to help the healing process. What you think effects every cell in your body. You can even close your eyes and imagine your body healing it's self. This is called guided imagery. The famous Dr. Andrew Weil, M.D. recommends it for most medical problems. It works if you believe. That is the catch to the mind, body, spirit connection. You must feel what you believe. There is lots of data to back it up. Deepak Chopra, M.D. has some wonderful books on the subject.

There you have it, the causes, signs and symptoms, stuff to avoid, and stuff to help. Now it is up to you. Your body can heal if you give it the right tools to use. I prefer to let Mother Nature supply me with those tools. I believe the body reacts much better to natural products rather than synthetic ones. You can heal your kidneys, even if you have kidney failure (as long as you still have them of course!).
