Home Remedy for Sore Throats
Nature has given you a home remedy for sore throats. In fact it has given you quite a few. I grew up having strep throat almost every year that I can remember until I graduated from high school and moved out on my own. My mom was great for making a natural home remedy for sore throats so I could feel better. She is the biggest reason I am so interested in natural health. She has shown me through the years that it does work. And she's 87 (now 88), in execellent health, not on any medication, and still has a sharp mind. That's proof enough for me. I have used the same home remedy for sore throats on my own children and recommend it to my friends and clients.
No man is wise enough by himself. Norwegian Folk Saying My first memory of Dad's home remedy for sore throats is drinking hot whiskey with honey and lemon. It tasted terrible going down, and even worse comming up. But the next day I was a whole lot better. I wonder sometimes if I was better because I never wanted to experience that again! No matter what the reason it worked. I never had to have that sore throats home remedy again. What causes sore throats -strep throat- -hay-fever- -sinus infection- -breating through your mouth, especially when you sleep- -viral or bacterial infection- -stress- -adrenal exhaustion- -smoking- -of course there are more, but these are the most common- New Update....
I just got a newsletter which said at the first sign of a sore throat put a few drops of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide in each ear and leave for 10 minutes. The reasoning behind it - germs (bacteria or viruses) can enter through the ears and travel to the throat. I have not had the chance, thank goodness, to try this out yet so I can not say if it works or not. Just a new tip! If you think you have strep throat see your doctor, it is contagious.
Home remedy for sore throats My recommendations are: -honey and lemon in hot water with a pinch of cayenne pepper- -marshmallow-(the herb, not the sweet food!) used as a tea soothes inflammed mucous membranes in the throat -licorice-taken as a tea reduces inflammation, soothes the throat, and helps the immune system (the deglycyrrihizinated, or DGL, doesn't have the active ingredient in it that works). People with high blood pressure shouldn't use licorice, it can raise the blood pressure. -mullein-anti-viral, as a tea or a tincture of 25-40 drops in hot water every three hours or so -slippery elm- as a tea or in a lozenge soothes a sore throat. This herb has a long history of being a home remedy for sore throats. -eucalyptus-mix with olive oil and rub on the neck. Cover with a towel. Mom used to use a cotton dish towel and pin it around the neck. She also used a vaporizer with eucalyptus for me to breath. It is antiseptic, cooling and reduces swelling. -lemon balm- as a tea or a gargle. It is a member of the mint family and is anti-viral and anti-bacterial. Also known to work for strep throat. -garlic and onion-eat raw. Both are anti-viral and anti-bacterial. Work for strep throat. -oregon graperoot, goldenseal, gold thread, and baybarry-all are anti-bacterial. Usually as a tincture in hot water. Do not use if pregnant or nursing -salt water gargle-I use sea salt. Mix 1 tsp. sea salt in 1 cup warm water and gargle. Do not swallow. This kills germs and helps with the pain. -cider vinegar and honey in water-this helps with the pain -echinacea-helps stimulate the immune system and reduces swelling. You can take this with antibiotics for strep throat. If you are allergic to ragweed, you could be allergic to echinacea. -ginger-taken as a tea helps relieve irritation of the throat. Mild anti-viral herb. -vitamin C-the good standard natural treatment. You can take 1000mg every hour until it gives you the runs. Then take just under that amount. Of course you need to change your toothbrush to make sure you don't catch the same bug again. And eat light for awhile. This gives your body the time to fight the infection rather than using it's energy to digest food. A rice or miso diet is great. Rice is the closest food to our body's normal pH so it is easier to digest and utilize. Don't let yourself get dehydrated, drink plenty of water or broth. My favorite home remedy for sore throats is a tea made by Traditional Medicinals called Throat Coat. I recommend it to people all the time. It does work. You can find Throat Coat Tea here.
I have never tried it for strep throat since I haven't had it for years, but I would imagine it would help with the pain.
When I had strep throat as a child I remember having to use a hot water bottle filled with salt water. I would hang it over the shower head and put the tube in my mouth and let the water run out my nose. It was absolutely a horrible experience. But it worked. The white spots would go away and I did not have to take any antibiotics. This was doctors orders. I wish some of them would prescribe this kind of treatment now days! It was not the kindest home remedy for sore throats or strep throat, but the long term results are much safer.
