Constipation Remedies

Chronic constipation is the number one GI complaint in the US. More than 2.5 million people go to the doctor for constipation every year. That's a whole lot of doctor visits for a condition that can be very controlable at home. Most of the time it is caused by diet and lifestyle. Although the modern medical system probably won't tell you that. They will more than likely write you a prescription for a laxative that can be habit forming.

The physician should not treat the disease, but the patient who is suffering from it. Maimonides (A.D. 1110)

Symptoms of constipation

-bowel movements should be formed, but not hard-

-infrequent bowel movements-

-flatulence and gas-

-fatigue-

-nervous irritability-

-coated tongue-

-headache-

-bad breath-

-body odor-

-mental dullness-

You should digest your food and get rid of the rest within 12 to 15 hours. A real good way to tell how long it takes is to eat some corn. It doesn't digest all the way and you can see it in the stool. Yes, that means you have to look at it. I believe it is a good practice to clean out your system on a regular basis.

When you are constipated your food sits in your colon and ferments. It is a breeding ground for bacteria, viruses, parisites, yeasts and more. It can cause lots of illnesses when it gets reabsorbed into the body.

What to do about constipation

That all depends on the cause of the problem. For most people it is a matter of cleaning up their eating habits. Cutting out the hydrogenated fats, sugar, pop, dairy, caffenine, alcohol, and eat less red meat. Not overeat and not eating late at night. Not eating when you are stressed, your food doesn't digest. Do drink lots of water. Do eat high fiber foods, like raw vegetables. Or lightly steamed ones. Whole grains are high in fiber. Apples are the best.

Then there is the matter of exercise. It is necessary for the digestive system to function properly. I'm not saying you have to go to the gym and work out for hours a day. I would recommend a daily walk for half and hour, or do some yoga. Yoga isn't hard and is a great remedy for constipation.

For some eating extra fiber doesn't do the trick. That could mean that your intestinal muscles aren't contracting enough to move the food through you. There is a product called Digest RC which is the most popular digestive aid sold in Europe. Fortunately I know where to get it here. The main ingredient is black radish extract. It is rich in fiber and digestive stimulants. It also helps the muscles contract (peristalsis). It also helps boost the immune system. This formula also contains artichoke which helps digestion. Peppermint is another ingredient. This also helps digestion. And it contains charcoal which absorbs toxins.

You can find Digest RC here. Just enter Digest RC in the search box.

Other home remedies for constipation include:

-on an empty stomach, 4-8 grams of vitamin c powder and 1500 mg of magnesium oxide powder with a glass of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. This could work in as little as 45 minutes. You may want to adjust the amount if this causes diarrhea.

-vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) in a recommended dose of 2000-3000 mg on an empty stomach. This also may work very fast.

Constipation prevention

-probiotics (acidophilus)-you may want to avoid the use of antacids or milk of magnesia, they kill the good bacteria in the gut.

-avoiding pharmaceutical laxatives, they have been linked to the developement of cancer.

-avoiding painkillers, they may cause constipation.

-some prescription drugs also cause constipation, read the side effects pages on the ones you use or ask the pharmacist.

-garlic and turmeric help regulate the bowels.

-milk thistle and dandelion also soften the stool.

-Aloe vera juice and apples (pectin) are great regulators.

Remember to always check with your healthcare professional before going on a cleanse if you have any illnesses. Different remedies work different for lots of people. If you don't have any luck with one, you might want to try another one. I don't know anybody that shouldn't get relief with vitamin c when enough is taken. In the long run it is important to prevent constipation. Illness breeds in an unhealthy colon.
