Cleaning smell out of refrigerater

I used to do apartment maintenace, and every once in awhile a fridge would be found off, full of food. Being busy, I just didn't want to spend hours scrubbing, so I would take out the racks and drawers, and stuff as many crumpled up brown paper bags as I could get into it. Left it for a day or so, and threw them all out. If I could still smell bad odor, I would stuff it full again. The paper bags absorbed the odors.

Never had to throw one fridge out.
